Streaming platforms measure your track's integrated loudness (LUFS) and adjust playback volume so every song in a playlist plays at roughly the same level. This is normalization - and it is the single most important concept in modern mastering.

The loudness paradox
If you master at -8 LUFS for Spotify (-14 target), your track is turned down 6 dB. If your neighbor masters at -14 LUFS, their track plays untouched. Both tracks play at the same volume in the playlist. But your track lost 6 dB of dynamic range to get there, while theirs kept all of it. The listener hears yours as flat and lifeless next to theirs - even though yours was "louder" before normalization.
